Message from the Vice-Dean, Professor Joyce Tsoka-Gwegweni

Welcome to the Faculty of Health Sciences Research Division. As part of the UFS vision to be a research-led institution, the Research Division promotes and supports research activities in order to ensure the Faculty achieves excellence in research, scholarship, and innovation.  

Achievements and global recognition

As a Faculty, we pride ourselves in our research achievements and global recognition, which include the following:

  • The quality of our research output in the past five years. 
  • We enjoy growth in the number of research masters and doctoral students recruited locally and internationally.
  • National and international recognition of our researchers:

    • The School of Nursing is well known for its research on wound care.
    • School of Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology Department has put the Faculty on the global stage in terms of its cutting-edge research in Indigenous Knowledge Systems, particularly its research on the effect of marijuana on major diseases like cancer, malaria and diabetes.
    • The RWM Frater Cardiovascular Research Centre provides an interdisciplinary training and research platform for scientists and clinicians from different backgrounds to develop as researchers and collaborators in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, and related domains.
  • Increasing the number of NRF-rated researchers.
  • State-of-the-art research and clinical teaching and learning facilities, such as:
    • Our Clinical Skills Simulation Laboratories, which are well-equipped and the best in South Africa and Africa.
    • The National Control Laboratory for Biological Products: An ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited and Good Manufacturing Practice compliant laboratory. It is one of twelve World Health Organisation-recognised vaccine testing laboratories worldwide and is a member of the global WHO NCL Network for Biologicals. It performs local lot release testing of vaccines for the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority and conducts testing for regulatory authorities in Africa on request. It also conducts quality testing on vaccines from Brazil, India, Russia, China, and Indonesia for the WHO.
Research leadership

We provide research leadership by promoting and supporting research activities to ensure that the Faculty achieves excellence in research, scholarship and innovationThe Faculty of Health Sciences aims to continue producing high-quality research to increase contribution to local, regional, and global knowledge in the health sciences arena, as well as make a significant and positive impact on people's health in South Africa, Africa and beyond regional borders.

SERVICES
Research Administration
  • Provide research support through academic development initiatives.
  • Facilitate the research process through efficient administration and management.
  • Promote and guide research by supplying relevant and updated policies and regulations.
  • Ensure easy access to internal and external research support tools and resources.
  • Provide relevant and timely advice on research-related activities, processes, and systems.
Medical Writing/Editing
  • Our main role is to assist authors in getting their research formatted and edited according to the journal's author guidelines to publish. This is done by means of preparing manuscripts for publication according to the specific journal's guidelines and instructions.
  • Provide language editing of manuscripts (spelling, grammar and syntax, medical terminology).
  • Provide technical editing of manuscripts, such as
  • format text;
  • format tables;
  • convert data into graphs, if required; and
  • convert images in a specific format when required.

    • Check references to ensure accuracy (including references from journals, books, and the internet) and obtain the digital object identifiers (DOIs) when required.
    • Write cover letters to accompany manuscripts when required by specific journals and not provided by the author(s).
    • Ensure journals suggested by the author(s) are accredited.
    • Assist with the revision of manuscripts received from reviewers.

  • The Faculty Research Forum has existed for more than 50 years. It attracts high-quality research presentations with a Francois Retief Lecture presented at the opening of the Forum by a high-profile national and global expert.
