Dr Maasdorp completed his undergraduate training at the University of the Free State in 2001, whereafter he moved to Windhoek, Namibia for his internship. After working as a medical officer at Intensive Care Unit of Windhoek Central Hospital for another 2 years, he returned to South Africa to complete his Community Service year at the Manne Dipico Hospital in Colesberg in 2005.  He was then appointed as Registrar in Internal Medicine at the University of the Free State in 2006 and went on to complete his MMed(Internal Medicine) in 2009, FCP(SA) in 2010 and Cert Pulmonology(SA)Phys in 2012.  After working as a Consultant Pulmonologist at Universitas Academic Hospital, he went into Private Practice, working as Pulmonologist at the Netcare Greenacres Hospital in Port Elizabeth between 2015 and 2017.  Her returned to Bloemfontein in the Free State in 2018 after being appointed as Head of Critical Care at Universitas Academic Hospital and Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Health of the University of the Free State.
