Who is the Department of Oncology?
"Semper Consolari" - To Comfort Always
The University of the Free State (UFS) Department of Oncology has been a dedicated training, research and treatment facility for the past 40 years. Our trained -
- clinical oncologists,
- nursing staff,
- therapeutic radiographers,
- medical physicist and
- mould room technicians
are sought after in practices both nationally and internationally.
As a national reference centre, patients from any income level and anywhere in the country may be referred to the Department. Our dedicated training area includes the Free State, Northern Cape, Lesotho and parts of the Eastern Cape.
What is Oncology?
Oncology is about cancer, the generation, conservation and dissemination of knowledge concerning the causes, prevention and treatment of cancer.
Research
An active and internationally respected research facility forms part of the Department. Regular participation in international studies ensures that patients, mostly from low income levels and disadvantaged backgrounds, have access to proven, effective drugs, which would not have been available to them otherwise.
The Future
We are currently in negotiations with the University of Maastricht for a joint research project on treatment of cancer of the cervix. From 2011 we will have the newest radiation capabilities, e.g. IMRT.
