Who is the Division Sports and Exercise Medicine?

The University of the Free State (UFS) Division Sports and Exercise Medicine focuses on three areas:

  • Medical care for the athletic population, including prevention and management of illness and injury, performance enhancement, team medical care, event medical service and environmental sports medicine.
  • Chronic disease risk reversal by exercise and lifestyle prescription for persons with chronic cardiovascular, pulmonary and metabolic diseases.
  • Prevention of chronic disease by promotion of active, healthy lifestyle and exercise prescription to the healthy population and people at risk.

The division is linked to the UFS Sports Medicine Clinic, which provides a multi-disciplinary sports and exercise medicine service to the University of the Free State and the public.

Training

Please note: The master's degree in Sports Medicine is in abeyance, and we are not taking in any new students until further notice.

Sports and Exercise Medicine is one of the youngest fields of specialisation in medicine in South Africa. It is not registered as a specialty with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, but a Master's degree in Sports Medicine (see note above) is recognised by the Council. (For future reference, Application form, procedure, and general letter.) Refer to the prospective students page for general orientation and registration.

Research

The division places emphasis on quality research in sports and exercise medicine. It recognises the multi-disciplinary nature of the field of study and actively promotes interdisciplinary cooperation in teaching, research and community service.
