Short Learning Programme

The Department of South African Sign Language offers an accredited short learning programme (SLP) on demand. The course is presented on NQF Level 5 and bears 8 credits.

The SLP is offered over a period of 40 hours contact time with 40 hours self-study. Courses are offered at the UFS in Bloemfontein or elsewhere in SA as requested.

The course is a basic course in South African Sign Language (SASL) and focuses on theoretical aspects as well as on conversational SASL. The theoretical aspects include the different categories of hearing loss, the pathological and cultural view of Deafness, as well as Deaf culture. SASL acquisition enables students to have a basic conversation in SASL, introducing themselves, talk about themselves, their families, and what they do.

Courses have been offered to various institutions, government departments (including the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation in the Free State, and the Departments of Education in the Western Cape and Mpumalanga, among others.)

Groups of ten or more people can be accommodated.

Contact Carla Bester at the department for a quotation.
