During Deaf Awareness 2015, the Department of SASL in conjunction with Signals, the student association, hosted various activities including a picnic in front of the Main Building of the UFS with the Vice Chancellor and Rector, Prof Jansen, where he emphasised the university's commitment to providing accessible education to Deaf students. We also visited Bartimea School for the Deaf, conducted workshops about Sign Language and had a church service which was accessible to Deaf people through a sign language interpreter. The Deaf choir from Bartimea School for the Deaf performed during the church service, hosted by the Dutch Reformed Church in Langenhovenpark. Deaf learners from Bartimea School created their own “monument” at the church in the form of a hand symbolising the sign for “I love you”. They planted flowers to celebrate Deaf Awareness Month. Deaf people participated in various activities after the church service, which included a fun walk to raise money for Bibles for the Deaf.
