Road Safety: Fun, games, and accidents
2015-03-17

Road safety is a priority at the UFS because KovsieLife is precious.

This was exactly the emphasis of the B Safe Road Safety Training Day held on the Bloemfontein Campus on Thursday 12 March 2015. At the event held outside Thakaneng Bridge, a make-believe accident scene was created when a student was run over by a bicycle. ER24 was there to respond accordingly.

After the ‘patient’ was rushed away while awestruck crowds stood staring and waiting, the games could begin…

Teams of UFS students and staff members participated in a three-part competition to generate road-safety awareness, and polish some much-needed road use knowledge and skills. The three parts of the competition were the road safety quiz, the road safety track, and the driver’s test. Every participant whose team completed all three parts were awarded their own ‘road safety degrees’ – for free.

At the road safety quiz, team members had to be wise, and think on their feet as they were questioned on the rules of the road – specifically campus roads.

The road safety track was made up with stop/go signs, pedestrian crossings, and a tight bend. Teams took the track hungry for speed, but having to adhere to all road signs and regulations as they went. And all of this on foot, skateboard, or bicycle.

The toughest challenge for all teams on the day seemed to be the actual driving test, where a member from each team literally had to undergo a test on the road as if going for their license all over again. This part of the event had participants anxious as they got into the Bidvest Car Rental-sponsored vehicle with a Mangaung Traffic officer, to go for a stressful ride outside and around the campus grounds.

On the end of the day, it was the team of our East College students who were the overall winners, taking home picnic baskets, courtesy of the Compass Group SA.
