
Wayde van Niekerk (400m), Rynardt van Rensburg (800m), and Johan Cronje (1 500m) form the South African Athletics team competing at the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Championships in Beijing, China from 22-30 August 2015.
Lamine Diack, the IAAF President, referred to this year’s meeting as “the biggest sporting event on the planet.” The 15th World Championships will have 2 000 athletes from over 200 countries assembled in Beijing for nine days. Competitors will be viewed by an worldwide audience of 6 billion.
Sarina Cronje, Kovsie Sport Senior Officer, said our university feels so privileged to have three athletes representing South Africa (SA) at an international level.
Wayde holds the SA 400m title, together with the 300m and 400m world titles. He is also the 200m SA record-breaker.
Johan Cronje is the SA 1 500m champion, and held the SA records for the 1 500m and mile.
Rynardt van Rensburg won the bronze medal in the 800m during the World Student Games held from 3-14 July 2015 in Gwanju, Korea.
These three athletes, together with Mthembi Chauque (20km walk), are also included in the South African Athletics team to the All Africa Games taking place from 4-19 September 2015 in Brazzavile, Republic of the Congo. Mthembi Chauque is the SA Student champion in the 20km walk event.
