"Students were encouraged to continue with their postgraduate at the University of the Free State. Prof Corli Witthuhn, Vice-Rector: Research, told students “to stand up and be assertive, and take control of your postgraduate degree.”

The Postgraduate School (PGS) at the University of the Free State (UFS) had an information day on Friday 22 July 2016 at the Reitz hall, Centenary Complex on the Bloemfontein Campus. Another key speaker at the event was Dr Henriëtte van den Berg, Director of the Postgraduate School.

Importance of a postgraduate degree

Prof Witthuhn spoke about the importance of postgraduate studies while Dr Van den Berg gave a PowerPoint presentation. “I encourage you to work hard this semester and talk to as many people as possible to choose the right course.” said Dr Van den Berg.

She also addressed the issue of high unemployment due to the lack of a postgraduate degree. “Employers want someone who can communicate efficiently, who has problem- solving ability, who can work in a team, and who has computer skills. Unfortunately, undergraduates lack these traits.”

Postgraduate funding opportunities

There are various funding opportunities available for students at the PGS. Joy Nogabe, Chief Officer: Postgraduate Funding Opportunities, told students that academic merit is the only criteria taken into account. She urged them to apply well ahead of time. “An average of 60% from the first year of studies will be an advantage.”

Students also had the opportunity to meet faculty representatives, and were handed an information packet with all kinds of valuable information to assist them in making a well-informed decision.
