The University of the Free State (UFS) East College visited Dr Blok Secondary School as part of the Academic Project under the RC Academics portfolio in collaboration with the Community Engagement office.

The college, consisting of the Arista, Beyers Naude, Khayalami, Legatum, Roosmaryn and Sonnedou residences on the Bloemfontein Campus, decided to make a difference to helping the scholars become well-rounded individuals. The students visited the school on 27 July 2016.

Needs analysis recognises shortage

After the needs analysis phase of the project, the decision was made to donate sports equipment to the school as there was an evident shortage, hampering the development of learners. The delivery included rugby, netball and soccer balls, together with some cones, water bottles, and chess sets.

“We were invited to attend their assembly and hand over the equipment to the principal. Here we saw the rich tradition of the school as well as the pride and respect of the scholars,” said Gerhard Liebenberg, RC Academics of Beyers Naude residence.

Becoming a balanced individual

The East College RC Academics believe that to be a truly balanced individual, you need to foster a sport, academic, social, and cultural life. Sport will give the scholars the chance to be active physically and interact socially with other students and teachers.

The school gave a warm welcome to the UFS East College members who left them with the hope of becoming well-rounded individuals, and aspiring to achieve their own greatness.
