Every year pupils get the opportunity to showcase their science projects at the Eskom Expo. This year’s expo was held at the Callie Human Centre on the Bloemfontein Campus of the University of the Free State (UFS). The university’s Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences is one of the sponsors of this event.

The Expo seeks to promote science among pupils with the aim of exposing them to future careers in the sciences. More than 350 learners from Bloemfontein, Botshabelo and Lesotho attended the event where Grades 5 to 11 exhibited their science projects about their own scientific investigations. Pupils from schools in and around Bloemfontein also received invitations to attend this open day event.

Two pupils from Eunice High School, Runé Edeling and Paige Sorour, exhibited their magic magnetic wand that works wonders. This eco-friendly instrument was designed to cost-effectively extract oil from the ocean after an oil spill. They believe that the magnetic wand will attract the nickel in oil and in this way extract the oil from the ocean.
