What is Microbiology?

Microbiology is the study of the unseen world around us. It is the study of very small, living organisms, such as fungi, algae, protozoa, bacteria, and viruses that can only be studied with microscopes.
Microorganisms can have negative effects on us, such as causing disease in humans, animals, and plants. It can also be used to our benefit in the production of food and beverages like bread, wine, beer, and cheese. Microorganisms are also used in the production of pharmaceutical products such as antibiotics and vaccines.

What do Microbiologists do?

Microbiologists investigate how microorganisms live and function, how they interact with each other, how they interact with other living things and with their environment. This knowledge is used to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases in humans, animals, and plants. It is also used to exploit micro-organisms to the benefit of society and the environment, for example the production of food and pharmaceuticals. People studying Microbiology, can work in research positions and will likely find jobs in the medical, pharmaceutical, academic, or food industries.
The use and manipulation of microorganisms to perform useful tasks (biotechnology) is a major research field at the University of the Free State.
