During the study of the degree at EnSci, I learned several valuable skills and lessons. The most important is to be able to work under pressure and realizing the importance of time management. Finally, I also learned to work as a team, striving with a common goal towards success and helping each other along the way!

I had the privilege to start my studies at the University of Pretoria in Electronic Engineering after completing my B.Sc. Majoring in Physics and Engineering Subjects. After successfully completing my first semester at another university, it is a pleasure to share some of my experiences with you. Firstly, I would like to assure you that you are indeed receiving education of the highest quality, meaning you can walk into another university on 3rd year level with confidence, knowing you have been prepared extremely well. Engineering is extremely hard work, but you have all of the tools and more at your disposal. How you decide to use these and what you make of this degree is entirely up to you. It is your responsibility. I believe in each and every one of you! Take the future, it is there for the taking.

Best of luck with your studies! I am very excited to see EnSci engineers changing the world!

"I must complement EnSci for providing me with the knowledge and skills to slide into 3rd year civil at the University of Witwatersrand without any obstacles."

I graduated from the University of the Free State (Kovsies) in 2017 (BSc. Majoring in Physics and Engineering Subjects). I am currently a 4th year civil engineering student at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg. If you were to ask me how my experience was studying at Kovsies and then shifting universities, I would say, “Best decision I’ve ever made”. The degree at Kovsies was not all fun and games'. On the contrary, on a few occasions I asked myself, “Why am I doing this to myself?”. But, after graduating and starting school at Wits I realised how valuable the foundation was that I established during my years of study at Kovsies. The transition and adjustment process proceeded smoothly since the first day at Wits. On numerous occasions in the past two years I looked back and appreciated the personal attention and total commitment from the EnSci team. You don’t have those personal interactions with lecturers elsewhere, and I feel this aspect helped me to accept the ‘jump’ from high school to engineering at university level.

For me, the next step is entering into the industry. I am considering a master's degree, however, I still have to do more thinking before I can decide on this. I am fortunate to have received a job offer by a company called SCIP Engineering group as a junior civil & structural engineer from January 2020. To close off, a bit of advice. You might have heard this from one of your current lecturers, Professor Marx. “Work smarter, not harder”. Form a small group of friends/colleagues to just speak to and reason with about the course material. Engage with the material after each lecture to stay up to date. This will help you to appreciate and make the most of the following lecturer, and aid you when studying for the exams. Good luck, and remember to just do your best.

Project EnSci gave me a strong academic bases as well as exposure to the various fields of engineering, math and physics. On this bases I could make a well informed decision what I wanted to achieve in my life. After some practical experience in the engineering field I made a decision that engineering was not for me. After I finished my Engineering physics degree in 2016 I started studying Actuarial science at UFS. Because of the solid academic bases EnSci gave me, I was able to start the degree in second year. I am currently in my third year of Actuarial science and I still benefit every day from the experience I had with EnSci. I plan to complete my Actuarial Science Honours next year and I look forward to climbing the corporate ladder.

EnSci is a great place start to start if you are interested in engineering sciences. It will provide you with an array of knowledge that can be used to serve further studies. The content of the subjects allowed me to transfer to Stellenbosch to finish engineering without feeling like the work has changed.

I loved my time at EnSci. I found it the most challenging part of my 20-year career.

I am now back to my first love of flying. I am now operating the Augusta A109 Light Utility Helicopter. At EnSci, I learnt to question a lot more and have become a lot more analytical and systematic in problem solving.

  • Damund de Klerk

The degree that I completed at EnSci, really prepared me well for my further studies of Civil Engineering at WITS.

  • Godfrey Kenalemang

My time at Ensci was worthwhile. The knowledge I acquired about science(physics) is one that a lot of engineers don't have. It feels great to know more than just about your field.

I left EnSci for Northwest University of Potchefstroom (NWU) not knowing what the quality of educational is which EnSci equipped me with. After a year of studying, my experience enabled me to conclude that the foundation that was poured by EnSci and its staff is far greater than that of my co-students at NWU. I urge every student to work hard - not just in your Engineering subjects but also the Mathematics and Physics. If you do this you will stand out above the other Engineering students and the foundation of your future will be properly laid.

The word EnSci evokes a plethora of emotions and experiences for past students and for students currently studying at the faculty. For those of you that will apply in the coming years, the abbreviation EnSci will at first only be associated with the words “Engineering sciences”. However, through my personal experiences for two consecutive years as a class representative the abbreviation EnSci has been completely redefined to:

    Energetic Nurturing Supportive Compassionate Impeccable

My three years at the faculty did not only personally develop me, but also dispensed with the necessary tools to continue and strive at Stellenbosch University, where I am currently studying Civil Engineering.  For those who are deciding to study at the EnSci faculty, my advice to you is to do everything possible in order to be admitted into this amazing community. It is an experience you will forever be grateful for.

I hope this letter find you well. I spent 3,5 years at EnSci, and this was the most challenging time I’ve ever had in my learning years if I put it that way. Challenging in the positive sense of cause. Prior to EnSci I had spent a year in the Physics department and two weeks into EnSci I noticed the level of support that the EnSci students were getting, including myself. We had good study facilities, good facilitators, and good tutors. EnSci was amazing in the sense that quite often the department would engage the students in the vision and mission of the department itself. EnSci was a place where students from different backgrounds came together and were treated with the same level of professionalism. Students could even engage individually with their lecturer if there was a drop in their performance. The list for me is endless at how good my time at EnSci was. My final semester was the most difficult since I didn’t have a PC to do my work, but once again EnSci was there for us with its computer lab and flexible time schedule. I’m forever grateful for all the time I got to spend there.

My New Journey: The year 2019 started well with me getting the prestigious opportunity to study at Wits. It got even better later when I got messages from UFS for my graduation. This was a dream come true and I could not have done it without the people at EnSci. My first view of my new academic setup was that this was going to be a smooth sailing since most of the things we had done in depth at EnSci. However, what caught me off-guard was the level of assignments, practical and projects that one had to do. This was a very big challenge for me since all of them involved working in groups, a very tedious process for me. The other challenge was that we only wrote one test per semester then it’s exam as soon as the projects are all in. It was difficult for me to adapt to this in time. But on average I can conclude that anyone coming from EnSci to Wits is more likely to do well. They must just be prepared to take advantage of the modules that they are familiar with, to work well with people, and lastly attend all classes and consult their lecturers religiously.
