Natural and Agricultural Research Centres: ARC-DoL-UFS Research Chairs
The urgent and evolving challenges posed by climate change demand holistic, interdisciplinary research that explores the complex relationship between agriculture and the environment. To contribute meaningfully to climate change adaptation and mitigation in the agricultural sector – while informing policy, shaping public discourse, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices – the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), the Department of Agriculture, and the University of the Free State (UFS) launched a strategic partnership in late 2024.
This collaboration established seven research chairs over a five-year period, co-funded by the ARC and the UFS, and anchored in two centres of excellence (COEs) that support South Africa’s commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Rooted in inclusivity and the cultivation of emerging researchers, the initiative aims to grow these chairs into world-class, sustainable research hubs with lasting national and global impact.
