On 11 March 2025, the University of the Free State (UFS) Career Services hosted its annual Law Career Fair at the Callie Human Centre. This event continues to be a stepping stone for Law students, offering them direct engagement with leading law firms and potential employers.
Law students had the opportunity to interact with a range of legal professionals, gain insight into the expectations of the industry, and explore various career paths. The turnout was impressive, with representatives from some of the country’s top law firms engaging with students throughout the day. The atmosphere was buzzing with enthusiasm as students took advantage of the chance to ask questions, network, and gather crucial career advice.
Ahead of the fair, UFS Career Services prepared students for the event through a series of communications and reminders. This included emails and social media updates, ensuring that students were well aware of the firms attending and the benefits of participating. On the day itself, an SMS reminder ensured a strong attendance, reinforcing the message that law firms were on campus and ready to meet future legal professionals.
Student feedback highlighted the value of these interactions. Many students appreciated the opportunity to connect with legal professionals and gain first-hand knowledge about different firms. One student shared: "I must be active not just in my academics but also in leadership positions.” Another remarked, “The fair helped me understand the importance of vac work, getting involved in organisations, and participating in moot court.” A third student noted, “Having extracurricular activities is important.”
Career Services encourages students to monitor the Career Hub for continuous job opportunities and professional development events. Staying engaged with these initiatives ensures that students remain at the forefront of career prospects, giving them a competitive edge in the legal field.
This career fair is just one of the many ways the UFS supports students in navigating their future. Whether it is gaining practical insights, securing internships, or networking with top employers, these events are invaluable stepping stones towards a successful legal career. Keep an eye out for future fairs and workshops – your next big opportunity could be just around the corner!
