The University of the Free State Humanities Career Week took place from 6 to 8 August on the Bloemfontein Campus and from 5 to 7 August on the Qwaqwa Campus. Humans have been interested in understanding ourselves and others since the beginning of time. The importance of social connection is ever increasing, and studies have linked it to happiness and longevity. With a world that is increasingly digitalised, exploring behaviour and beliefs is bound to gain traction.
Companies are putting a growing emphasis on human skills for employees in all positions, and many key figures in our past and present have humanities degrees. That was the message from most of the speakers who addressed communication, social work, languages, criminology, psychology, sociology, philosophy, history, anthropology, and governance and political transformation in a series of online sessions on 7 August.
"Companies put a growing emphasis on human skills for employees in all positions, and many key figures in our past and present have humanities degrees."
On another day of the Humanities Career Week, students were coached in CV compilation and interviews, while exploring all the pathways that they could follow with their degrees. All these sessions and consultations with UFS Career Services are free for registered students. An entrepreneurship exhibition offered a view of the possibilities for those who wish to grow their own business.
Students were reminded of the value of volunteering and how it can enhance their employability. The benefits of multilingualism were highlighted, noting that being able to speak an international language can open many doors.
Look out for communication from UFS Career Services and make sure that you stay at the forefront of career success.
