Systematic Theology

General Information

This discipline deals with church dogma.

Various sub-sections are distinguished. In the first year, the emphasis in Symbolics is on the articles of faith in the church, such as the Heidelberg Catechism.

These topics are later extended in:

  • Systematic Theology – one of the important disciplines in Theology. In this course, the focus is on the individual dogmas of the church – for example, dogmas related to God, his Revelation, humankind, the doctrine of predestination and the Covenant, as well as the Holy Spirit. Systematic Theology provides a systematic account of Biblical teachings on specific themes. It deals with the convictions of influential thinkers in each of these fields.

  • Theological Ethics – another important sub-discipline deals with the Scriptural norms that should govern moral aspects of our existence. Interesting topics from both individual and social ethics are considered: abortion, euthanasia, homosexuality, nuclear weapons, publication control and civil disobedience – to name a few.
  • Apologetics – a further sub-discipline explores the influence of apostate philosophy and ideology on theology.
  • Polemics, which denotes the study of false doctrines espoused by deviant directions in Christendom.
  • In the course on the Encyclopaedic context of the discipline, we argue a case for recognition of Theology as a science.
