1.1 OVERVIEW
A PhD with specialisation in Industrial Psychology is a research-based
degree and is intended for people who would like to pursue further studies
after completing a Master’s Degree with specialisation in Industrial
Psychology (either a professional masters or research masters). A Doctoral
degree can be granted in this department on the grounds of a thesis or a
number of interrelated, publishable manuscripts/published articles.
Students who wish to pursue the interrelated, publishable
manuscripts/published articles route should do so in compliance with the
General Rules.
1.2 ADMISSION
In order to qualify for consideration of admission to the PhD programme, a
prospective student should adhere to the following prerequisites:
A student must have obtained a satisfactory academic record, including:
· a relevant honours degree in Industrial Psychology with an average of at
least 65%
· a master’s degree with specialization in Industrial Psychology with an
average of at least 65% (in the case of a professional masters, a mark of
65% for the research dissertation is also required). No mini-dissertations
or dissertations of less than 60 credits or with a duration of less than
one academic year will be sufficient to be considered for admittance to a
PhD.
Please note that this alone does not guarantee selection into the
programme.
· Adherence to the stated requirements will not necessarily guarantee
admission as admission to a Doctoral Degree Programme is subject to the
availability of a promotor in the specific topic/research area that the
prospective student want to investigate, as well as the approval by the
departmental chair: Industrial Psychology, based on the submission of an
approved research proposal.
· Applicants whose previous degrees were obtained from a foreign university
or from universities outside of South Africa must have their qualifications
evaluated by South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) prior to
submitting an application to the University.

You also need to email the following documentation to the Department of
Industrial Psychology:
1. Certified ID/Passport Copy
2. Certified Degree Certificate/s
3. Full academic record/s (undergraduate and post-graduate)
4. A copy of your master’s dissertation
5. The topic/area of research you are interested in and would like to
investigate for purposes of your PhD studies

If the above is found to be satisfactory, the applicant would need to
prepare a 2000 word (reference list excluded) short research proposal. The
short proposal will be reviewed by a panel in terms of the viability of the
study. If the panel find the short proposal acceptable and the study
viable, the applicant would be allowed to register. Thereafter, a promotor
will be assigned to the student and the student will have the opportunity
to develop a full research proposal to be approved by first, the Department
of Industrial Psychology – and second, if approved, by the EMS Faculty
Research Committee. If approved, the student will be allowed to continue
with the PhD study.
