Undergraduate programme in Public Administration and Management
BAdmin is an established specialised degree relevant for a career in the public sector and non-government organisations. This degrees focus on courses in Public Management and Municipal Management, with a choice of supporting subjects. It prepares the student for a wide variety of careers in the field of public sector management.
Modules in public financial management prepare the student who would like to follow a public-sector career in financial management or public accounting. It can lead to job opportunities in budget departments of municipal, provincial, or central government finance, or careers which have to do with expenditure control, internal auditing, and other financial fields. Certain financial institutions, such as the office of the Auditor-General or the South African Revenue Services (tax administration) or the financial departments of other public institutions, offer employment opportunities to graduates with this type of degree.
Modules in the management of human resources in the public sector and organisational analysis, prepare the student to apply a holistic approach to human resource management and labour relations in the public sector. It further provides an overview of the organisational environment in which the public servant needs to work. Adding value to the students’ ability to function effectively, are the modules in policy analysis and implementation.
All three spheres of government are important within this field of study and therefore several modules focus on municipal governance and management as well as intergovernmental relations.
