A Medical Physic's duties in Diagnostic Radiology can be placed under the following headings:
Radiation Protection
Give advice on shielding and general recommendations regarding the radiation safety of workers and patients. Carry out patient dose calculations for high risk patients.
Equipment purchasing
Assist with the writing of specifications for new equipment. Give advice regarding practical considerations during equipment purchasing and decision making.
Quality Assurance
Carry out quality control procedures on all x-ray equipment including CT and Mammography on a yearly basis (approximately 60 tubes in the three hospitals that we render a service to).
Provide quality assurance framework for mammography on a continuous basis.
Provide a mammography quality assurance service to other practices outside the framework of the three provincial hospitals.
Communication
Promote the sharing of knowledge and information regarding the condition of equipment at regularly organized meetings.
Training
Train assistant medical physicists in all of the areas mentioned by assigning them appropriate projects.
Present lectures on relevant subjects to Radiology Registrars and Radiographers during In Service Training sessions.
Research
Assist with any research undertaken by other members of the Radiology Department. Whether the investigator be a Higher Diploma Radiography student or a registrar. Promote research in areas which will be beneficial to the Diagnostic Radiology Department.
