The Urogynaecology Unit functions from within Universitas Academic hospital and its services include both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures related to pelvic floor dysfunction and female urinary incontinence.
- A weekly specialist clinic sees patients referred from the entire Free State for assessment of the whole spectrum of pelvic floor dysfunction. Specialised investigations such as trans-labial and 3D ultrasound are utilised in the diagnosis and treatment planning of patients. Urodynamic investigations for patients with urinary incontinence are offered at these clinics.
- The unit also functions as part of a multi-disciplinary team including urologists and physiotherapists specialising in the treatment of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction.
- Two theatre lists per week are dedicated to the surgical management of pelvic organ prolapse and female urinary incontinence. Procedures performed include advanced pelvic floor reconstruction performed both abdominally and vaginally, cystoscopy and surgical treatment of urinary incontinence.
Undergraduate training takes place in the form of academic ward rounds, clinics and theatre attendance. Postgraduate training entails weekly academic discussions and clinical teaching in the clinic as well as in theatre.
