The optometrist has knowledge of

  • visual science
  • knowledge of optics and an understanding of the structure and function of the visual system
  • central areas of optics
  • physiological optic
  • ophthalmic neuro-science

The optometrist diagnoses and manages visual and/or ocular problems and co-manages related systemic conditions.

The profession includes dealing with

  • optic problems
  • ocular refractive states
  • the use of ophthalmic lenses and appliances
  • ocular diseases in low vision and their management

The purpose of this qualification is to provide healthcare professionals who can pursue a career as an optometrist, or should the diploma exit be opted for, as a dispensing optician. A need exists for optometrists/dispensing opticians in the state and private health care sectors. The programme is unique as it is offered in primary healthcare centres and training hospitals where facilities are shared with ophthalmologists.

Health Services in South Africa have a need for professional optometrists to achieve the aim of helping disabled citizens to reach their full potential, and in combating and preventing blindness.
