SCOPE OF INFORMATION


Short Description of the SLP:

This course equips nurses with the knowledge and skills to implement Patient Blood Management (PBM) in the clinical setting. PBM improves patient outcomes by optimising blood use and minimising unnecessary transfusions.

Nurses are key to effective PBM. This course addresses the educational gap in Africa, empowering nurses to play a vital role in PBM implementation, leadership, and training.

Admission Requirements:

Registered with SANC (South African Nursing Council) or equivalent registration body as a registered professional nurse.

Diploma in Nursing (Registered Professional Nurse)
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Sciences (Registered professional nurse)
Or country-specific equivalent

Unit 2: PBM Pillar 1: Optimise red cell mass
Unit 3: PBM Pillar 2: Minimise blood loss and bleeding.
Unit 4: PBM Pillar 3: Harness and optimie physiological reserve of anaemia.
Unit 5: Patient centred decision making.
Unit 6: Implementing PBM.
Assessments:

The course will use a mix of assessments throughout each unit, culminating in a final reflective assignment. This assignment will focus on how the learner has grown through the course, including:

  • New skills learned
  • Applying those skills in their workplace
  • Positive results from using the new skills
  • Future changes they plan to make
  • Overall impact on the learner's development
