Field of Study | Harmony is one of South Africa’s leading gold producer and it is counted among world leaders in gold mining. The mining company is inviting students and prospective students already studying or intending to study at a South African university to apply for the bursary for 2014 tuition.
The objective of the Harmony Bursary Scheme is to recruit and select bursars for full time study at accredited Tertiary Institutions. By educating, training and developing individuals who demonstrate the appropriate skills, knowledge and competence, value creation is sustained for the company and all it’s stakeholders.
The scheme contributes to the development of historically disadvantaged South Africans and covers tuition and residence fees, as well as prescribed textbooks and a personal allowance. |
Description | Preference is given to the following fields, which are functional to the mining industry:
Mining Engineering
Mining is an underground or open cast process whereby minerals are extracted by means of explosives.
Metallurgy
Metallurgy is the study of the economical recovery of precious metals and minerals. (Exploring by use of all the disciplines and techniques.)
Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
A competent Electrical or Mechanical Engineer is a member of the management team at each operation. They are responsible for the safe installation and the proper operation, running and maintenance of all machinery, both electrical and mechanical. They are also responsible for the safe erection and proper maintenance of all buildings and structures on these operations.
Geology
At Harmony the Geologist is an integral member of the Management Team, and is accountable for extracting ore body in an optimal manner. At an early stage the geologist will apply his/her knowledge to the practical solution of problems in the underground environment, liasing closely with the production teams. Daily duties include underground mapping, borehole logging, data collection and synthesis (structural, sedimentological and grade) and communication of their findings to the rock breaking teams.
Finance
The finance department is responsible for all financial transactions. The correct allocation, classification and value of these transactions should be done on a daily basis.
The function is also responsible to ensure that the company complies with certain statutory requirements as lined out by the Companies and Tax Acts. |

Description | The (IDC) awards bursaries every year as part of its corporate social investment programme.
The bursaries cover tuition fees, books, meals and accommodation for the duration of their studies at various South African universities. The corporation views education as key to growing the country. The IDC awarded 72 needy students with bursaries for the 2013 academic year.
The value of the bursary for full-time undergraduate/ diploma studies comprises of the following:
In the case of bursars residing with their parents/guardians or privately, a stipend is granted.
In the case of students residing in official University/ University of Technology residences, full residence fees are paid to the relevant institution (Catering/Self catering residences).
Tuition and registration fees.
A stipend for books and stationery is granted bi-annually
NB: The bursary may also be awarded for the purpose of acquiring a compulsory postgraduate qualification in order to obtain a prescribed professional status i.e. Chartered Accountant or BTech or Hons.
Bursaries are renewable annually, subject to acceptable proof of progress from the institution. |
Qualification Required | Candidates who are eligible:
South African citizens with a valid ID number residing in the Republic of South Africa and who qualify for admission to a University or University of Technology and FET college, and are not studying with the aid of an employer or bursary.
Applicants must have grade 12 Maths and Science with a minimum of a B aggregate symbol.
University or University of Technology students who have already successfully completed one or more years will be considered on their Grade 12 and most recent academic results.
If you are already studying towards a degree course for which you are applying for a bursary, you must have passed all courses for which you have registered at the university for the study period already completed.

Field of Study | What does a Sasol bursary include?
The Sasol bursary is a comprehensive bursary which includes the following:
- 100% of the prescribed university tuition fees, registration fees and exam fees.
- An amount equal to the average rate for accommodation in a single room at a university hostel at the university at which the Sasol bursar is studying. This rate is determined by sasol in conjunction with the university.
- An amount for meals based on three meals per day, as determined by the university.
- An amount of approximately R10 000,00 per annum, towards book and pocket money.
Note:
- Prescribed tuition fees, registration fees and exam fees are paid directly to the university.
- Students will be required to pay for any repeat subjects.
- Monies for accommodation are paid directly to the university if the student is staying in university-administered accommodation.
- In cases where the student elects to stay in non-university administered accommodation, monies in lieu of accommodation and meals will be paid directly to the individual. In such instances, the amounts will be limited to that prescribed in points 2 and 3 above.
- Book and pocket money will be paid directly to the individual.
- Payments in respect of the above are made twice a year. The first payment is made at the beginning of the first semester, and the second payment is made at the beginning of the second semester.
- Full details of the payment process and the requirements which must be met are communicated to successful applicants once a bursary has been awarded.
- Successful applicants will be bound contractually to work at Sasol after graduation for a period equal to the tenure of the bursary.

Qualification Required | The Trustees of the Claude Leon Foundation have established Postdoctoral Fellowships in Science, Engineering and Medical Sciences at South Africa universities.
The Fellowship will be available from January 2013 for two years and are valued at
R175 000.00 per annum.
In the second year of the Fellowship, on application, the Fellow may be granted R25 000.00 for presenting at an international conference.
