Kovsies squeeze into Varsity Football semi-finals
2014-08-01

It might have been a tough tournament, but none the less, Kovsies made it into the 2014 Varsity Football semi-finals.

Our boys from Bloem entertained their home crowd to a 1-1 draw against NWU-Mafikeng in the final round of fixtures on Monday night, 1 September 2014. Although a draw is not what one would wish for, it was enough to ensure our chance at the play-offs.

Both Kovsies and NWU had numerous chances to score within the opening 25 minutes of the match, but neither could secure a goal. The match became very intense, as it was both sides’ last chance of making the semis – and, no opening goal yet.

Kovsies were awarded a penalty late into injury time when Jay Jay Groenewald was brought down by Amogelang Maduo. Manxubandile Bantshi made no mistake in slotting the penalty to hand Kovsies a 1-0 lead at the break.

It was in the 75th minute that NWU made a comeback to level the score, after which no points were added to the board again. Due to Kovsies’ log points which were aquired throughout the tournament, we managed to squeeze into the top half of the log, despite the draw against NWU.

On Monday 8 September 2014 at 19:00, Kovsies will pay a visit to the log leaders, UJ, for an all-or-nothing semi-final.
