Mathys Roets shows wheelchairs at UFS
2014-10-22

The word spread quickly. Mathys Roets is coming to the Bloemfontein Campus to talk exclusively to staff and students with disabilities on campus and to show them new types of wheelchairs. Soon there was a crowd of people wanting to talk to him, around Mathys – who is not allowing his paralysis to get him down. That and the wheelchairs.

Mathys was left paralysed after a motorcycle accident in the Free State almost five years ago. The question on everyone’s lips was – will he be able to live fully again? However, Mathys proved to everybody that the world of a person with a disability could be equally fulfilling and active.

In the light of this, he came to show the newly developed wheelchairs and electronic support equipment to students and staff.

“These wheelchairs offer more choices for mobility and adventure,” he explained.

For this wheelchair, one uses one’s own weight to navigate and it enables you to move at a speed of up to 20 km/h. The Scootfree device is like an engine-driven scooter which can be attached to any wheelchair and it is also very mobile.
