As one Varsity Sports tournament ends, another starts. From 1 May 2015, we can see our Kovsies Women’s Hockey team competing in this year’s Varsity Cup Hockey tournament. The tournament alternates each year between the men’s and women’s teams, giving each their own attention and exposure.
The team is well-known for dominating tournaments, and their pre-season performances bears witness to this. With the new team just recently announced, Kovsie Hockey assured us that the team will certainly give supporters a nail-biting and polished performance throughout the tournament.
With the decision to broaden the base of Kovsie Hockey, the selection process entailed a gruesome process of pre-season games in which players were monitored, and their mental and physical fitness evaluated. Coach, Braam van Wyk, ensures that the wealth of talent the players possess, as well as their experience, will contribute to giving the team a competitive advantage over their opponents. With five Protea players; Tanya Britz, Cornelle Botha, Izelle Lategan, Nicole Walraven, and Linè Malan; bringing in additional experience, they work well in complementing and improving players’ performance as well as the team’s as a whole.
When asked about what he plans to improve from a technical perspective, Braam mentions that, “Something that we definitely need to work on is our percentages in the circle and converting goals.”
The first leg of the tournament kicks off with weekend games that will be hosted in Potchefstroom from 1 to 4 May 2015, with the second leg continuing from 8 to 11 May 2015.
