Golden Key International Honours Society is not only an honours society which recognises academic excellence but one which cares for its community. On Friday 5 February 2016, the honours students from the University of the Free State (UFS) Chapter headed to Grasslands Primary School as part of the Play with Golden Key community outreach initiative.
Members donated stationery and toys such as bean bags, soccer balls, hula hoops, skipping ropes, and board games to the school. They also spent time playing with learners, who were excited to play with their new toys.
Deputy Principal of Grassland Primary School, Lebaleho Masite received positive feedback about the day from learners. “The kids enjoyed the day very much and it was informative,” she said and added that, “They now play with their new toys every day.”
The Society’s Marketing and PR Director, Neo Kgoroba, found the experience to be an incredible and very emotional one. He said that the executive committee members of the UFS chapter built great relationships with the children and that the children had loved members too.
According to Neo, Golden Key aims to establish a relationship with Grasslands Primary School, and hope to make these visits quarterly events. “We want to do more than just bring them stationery but also help to upgrade the school in some way.”
The Golden Key UFS chapter undertakes community outreach initiatives throughout the year. Play with Golden Key is just one of the events planned to take place during the year
