Reading and writing was the focus of this year’s academic campaign for East College at the Bloemfontein Campus of the University of the Free State.

Adding a little fun to the students’ busy schedule, East College recently hosted a competition called Pick ’n Book, that encouraged them to use the services offered at the Sasol Library.

The Arista, Beyers Naude, Khayalami, Legatum, Roosmaryn, and Sonnedou residences took part in the competition to see which residence had taken out the most books over a certain period of time. The female residence, Roosmaryn, walked away with the first prize of R1 000.

Up-and-coming young writers also showed off their skills in a Poetry and Short Story competition that ran throughout last month.

The campaign ended with a college evening where the Dean of Education, Prof Sechaba Mahlomaholo, addressed students in an informal setting followed by coffee and doughnuts. The professor shared the importance of reading and spoke about the role it had played in his life.
