He went through traumatic life experiences and suffered from a mental breakdown, which led to him dropping out last year. That is why Tshepang Mahlatsi decided to establish a social platform to address issues of mental health among students.

Having the necessary support structures

The new platform will work with Student Development and Counseling (SDC) and will tackle issues which students are facing, but in a more relaxed (less formal) way than a support group. It is not only for people with a mental diagnosis, but will be open for everyone who feels the need to know more about mental health. It will also serve as information sessions.

“I was just around campus doing nothing,” Tshepang says about his 2016 experience. “It was only at that time when I realised I don’t wish for someone to go through this without the necessary support structures.”

Student group passionate about mental health

Tshepang and Marili Meyer met with the Student Life leadership to present the idea of the new platform to the SDC. The group wil not take away responsibilities from the SDC, but will be more flexible. A social student body will be created that is passionate about the community’s mental health. Through fellowship, students who are ready to make meaningful contributions, will be there for other students who are struggling to cope with the stresses of life.

The programme is currently being modified. If you have ideas, email Tshepang with the subject line: Mental Health Adv Group at tshepangmahlatsi767gmail.com
