Mission and Vision
In line with the Strategic Policy Framework on Disability for the Post-School and Education Training System that requires institutions to adopt an action strategy, including policy and research, and addressing challenges of vulnerable groups.
The Disability Rights Unit focuses on:
- Research in the disability field.
- Seek avenues to enhance the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and the African Protocol on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa.
- Lead the conversation on the protection of persons with disabilities against discrimination.
- Influence research and policy adoptions for the protection of disability rights.
- Foster compliance with relevant legislation and institutional policies, i.e. UFS Policy on Universal Access and Disability Support for students with disabilities and Anti-discrimination Policy.
- Developing short courses on current disability issues, from a human rights perspective.
- Facilitating roundtables discussions and academic conferences on human rights and contemporary issues pertinent to the field of disability.
- Educate, advocate, and lobby on issues regarding disability from a human rights/legal perspective.
- Advance the jurisprudence on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa and beyond.
