SHORT COURSES
The Department of Mercantile Law offers a range of short courses on the Bloemfontein Campus (during the week). The Certificate in Labour Law and the Advanced Course in Labour Law is also offered in Welkom, at the Qwaqwa Campus, and in Kimberley (dependent on a minimum number of entries). Please note that another venue may be considered if a minimum of 30 students enrol for such a course. The courses are as follows:
- CERTIFICATE IN LABOUR LAW
This practical six-month course includes a study of the legislation regarding the employment relationship between employer and employee, and includes, inter alia, the following acts:
- The Labour Relations Act
- Basic Conditions of Employment Act
- The Employment Equity Act
- The Skills Development Act
- ADVANCED COURSE IN LABOUR LAW
This programme is designed to support people who want to specialise in Labour Law. The course is presented over six months by academics and labour law practitioners. Legislation to be studied in depth:
- Labour Relations Act, 1995;
- Basic Conditions of Employment Act, 1997, and
- Employment Equity Act 1998

CERTIFICATE IN ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION
This practical six-month course, presented by academics and practitioners, includes the legislation with regard to conflict resolution between parties. The course includes the study of inter alia the following act:
- CERTIFICATE IN SOCIAL SECURITY LAW
This practical six-month course includes legislation with regard to social security of employees at the workplace and includes inter alia:
- The Occupational Health and Safety Act
- The Unemployment Insurance Act
- The Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act
- The Basic Conditions of Employment Act
- The Social Assistance Act
- CERTIFICATE IN COMMERCIAL LAW
This practical six-month course includes themes from Commercial Law, namely:
- Introduction to the Law
- The Law of Contract
- The Law of Delict
- Agency
- Insurance Law
- Negotiable/payment instruments
- Credit agreements
- ADVANCED COURSE IN COMMERCIAL LAW
This practical six-month course includes themes from Commercial Law, namely:
- Legal personality and Sole Proprietorship
- Law of Partnerships
- Close Corporations
- Business Trusts
- Company Law
