At the University of the Free State (UFS) Faculty of Law, student-centredness is more than a principle, it is the foundation of how we teach, engage, and innovate. Guided by UFS Vision 130, the Faculty ensures that students are active partners in shaping their academic journey through initiatives such as the In the Shadow of the Prosecutor Programme, inspired by student advocacy, which offers practical prosecutorial experience; Court Visits that connect classroom learning with real-world justice; and the Student Research Internship Programme, which equips postgraduates with advanced legal research skills in collaboration with the judiciary. Beyond these initiatives, diverse student voices are represented through the Faculty Council and associations, ensuring inclusivity, leadership, and shared ownership. Together, these efforts prepare our students to graduate as industry-ready professionals who are socially responsive and committed to justice and democracy.

In the Shadow of the Prosector Programme
The Faculty of Law at the University of the Free State (UFS), in partnership with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Free State, proudly launched the In the Shadow of the Prosecutors programme on 26 February 2025. The initiative officially began on 17 March 2025 and will run for five years, offering third- and final-year law students a unique opportunity to step into the world of prosecution.
This groundbreaking programme provides students with structured courtroom exposure and mentorship from experienced prosecutors, giving them first-hand insight into case preparation, courtroom advocacy, and prosecutorial decision-making. More than just observation, the initiative equips students with practical skills in ethical reasoning, legal strategy, and communication ensuring they graduate as both competent professionals and socially responsive citizens.
Importantly, In the Shadow of the Prosecutor Programme was inspired by student advocacy, particularly through the Black Lawyers Association, whose initiative helped bring this vision to life. It now stands as a legacy project that underscores the Faculty’s dedication to innovation, collaboration, and societal impact.
By opening doors to the prosecutorial process, this programme does more than prepare students for their legal careers it fosters a deeper commitment to justice, fairness, and the values that strengthen South Africa’s democracy.

Court visits - Supreme Court of Appeal
At the Faculty of Law, we believe that learning extends beyond the classroom. Court visits give our students the opportunity to experience the legal system in action seeing how judges, lawyers, and court officials work together to deliver justice.
These visits help students connect theory with practice, understand courtroom procedures and etiquette, and appreciate the impact of legal decisions on society. They also inspire students to think critically about the role of law, while preparing them for future careers in the legal profession.
By engaging directly with the justice system, our students develop the knowledge, confidence, and social awareness needed to become skilled and responsible legal practitioners.

Student Research Internship Programme
The Faculty of Law at the University of the Free State has, since 2024, coordinated the Student Research Internship Programme in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Justice, the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa (SCA) and the Free State Division of the High Court of South Africa.
In line with the objectives of the programme nine postgraduate students of the Faculty of Law of the University of the Free State are appointed as research interns to assist the judicial officers of the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Free State High Court. The research interns are required to conduct in-depth legal research, analyse case law, draft memoranda, and assist with the preparation of judgments and other legal opinions. The project aims to capacitate students with legal research skills and to expose them to the functioning of the South African judicial system. Since March 2025, the research interns have received stipends under the SASSETA internship programme.
