The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology and the University of the Free State, have established a METAGENOMICS and Applied Microbiology PLATFORM at the University of the Free State, called the SAENSE PLATFORM. The SAENSE PLATFORM deals with Screening Applications and Exploring Novelty in Specialised environments by studying the novel South African microbial diversity that gave rise to incredible functionalities that can be used to remediate contaminants in water, gas, and soil, with a strong focus on the mining environment of South Africa.

A limited number of opportunities exist for MSc STUDENTS to become involved in this exciting research. A background in molecular biology, protein techniques, microbiology or biotechnology is required. Applicants should be in the possession of a honours/master's by research degree. Preference will be given to SA citizens and previously disadvantaged groups.
