PhD POSITIONS AVAILABLE

TIA/UFS SAENSE PLATFORM

The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology and the University of the Free State, have established a METAGENOMICS and Applied Microbiology PLATFORM at the University of the Free State, called the SAENSE PLATFORM. The SAENSE PLATFORM deals with screening applications and exploring novelty in specialised environments, by studying the novel South African microbial diversity that gave rise to incredible functionalities, which can be used to remediate contaminants in water, gas, and soil, with a strong focus on the mining environment of South Africa.

A limited number of opportunities exist for PhD students to become involved in this exciting research. A background and understanding in molecular biology, genomics, protein techniques, biochemistry or biotechnology is required. Applicants should be in the possession of a relevant master's by research degree.

Candidates should have excellent interpersonal skills, ability to think laterally, and be competent in writing abilities with strong emphasis on research papers. Preference will be given to SA citizens and previously disadvantaged groups.

The value of the bursary that is offered to successful candidates is substantial. By applying, applicants should understand that educational qualifications will be verified and the UFS reserves the right not to appoint if a suitable candidate is not identified.

Please submit a well-motivated application, including a detailed CV and the contact details of two referees.

Applications must be submitted as soon as possible. Please email applications to FourieAJ1@ufs.ac.za at the SAENSE PLATFORM, Department of Microbial, Biochemical and Food Biotechnology, University of the Free State.
