Research

The main objectives of the research in short is to determine:

i) Utilization factors for different woody species (actual percentages of available and accessible browse/leaves that are used by browsing game species);

ii) Phenology values (leaf carriage percentages) for different woody species that determine the availability of browse during winter periods when deciduous plants shed leaves; and

iii) Nutritional status of browsing game species by means of faecal crude protein percentages to indicate when critical levels are reached where these animals will start to lose body condition due to a decline in browse quality and/or quantity.
