BACHELOR OF AND HONOURS IN ARCHITECTURE – BArchStud and BArchStud(Hons)
In broadly following the historical human and architectural development, the programme is formulated as a growth sequence from the primal to the civil. The main subjects (design, building science, history of architecture, and theory of architecture) address this development as a simultaneous and integrated occurrence achieving horizontal and vertical integration over four years.
During the first year, focus is placed on the individual’s interaction with the natural landscape. Context is instrumental to the course and the natural landscape is explored from a first-person perspective (my building in the natural landscape).
The second year, emphasis shifts to the group’s interaction with the edge of the city (our building in the urban landscape). The influence of the urban environment and how to respond appropriately is researched.
In the graduating year, the group’s interaction with different social realities within the city is considered. Social spaces and the manipulation of thresholds to create transitional spaces from public to private and the impact of the manipulation are closely investigated (their and our building in the urban landscape).
During the honours year, advanced studies into conservation, social housing, and sustainability are the focus.
This integrated interdisciplinary subject matter includes themes varying from design, history, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, and theory to law, building science, physics, and practice.
MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE - MArch (Prof)
At master’s level, the aspirant architect is expected to apply the knowledge gained over four years through translation, interpretation, and analysis, to make place for human occupation.
