Short CV

I started my tertiary education at the Technikon Pretoria (Tshwane University of Technology) in 1996 where I completed a National Diploma and B-Tech degree: Animal Production in 1999 and 2000 respectively. I then registered and completed my Masters and PhD degrees at the Centre for Sustainable Agriculture in Sustainable Agriculture, Rural Development and Extension in 2004 and 2010 respectively. I am currently holding the position of Research Team Manager: Animal Nutrition at the Animal Production Institute of the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), and Senior Lecturer: Centre for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development, University of the Free State .

I am an internationally well reputed animal nutritionist, who is a C2 rated scientist by National Research Foundation (NRF), registered with SACNASP as a Professional Animal Scientist and has published several papers in accredited scientific journals. I served as i) a council member for the South African Society of Animal Science (2015 – 2019), ii) committee member for the Red Meat Research Development in South Africa (RMRDSA),  iii) associate editor (small ruminant nutrition) for the South African Journal of Animal Science, iv) main editor for the Applied Animal Husbandry and Rural Development journal, iv) chairperson for the Publication Committee for the Animal Production Institute, and v) ad-hoc reviewer of research proposals for funding by the NRF and have regularly engaged in reviewing research papers for scientific journals. I serve as an external examiner for local and international universities, and have supervise post-graduate students.

I am the recipient i) for the Best Academic Achievement in the Centre for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development, University of the Free State,  State, 2004, ii) 2010 Norman Borlaug Fellowship Training Program of the United State Department of Agriculture (USDA), and was attached to the Kansas State University, Manhattan, US, iii) Davis Uys Trophy for the Best Scientific paper published in the South African Journal of Animal Science in 2011.

Research

My research pertains the use of agro-industrial by-products animal nutrition. This is done to develop cost effective animal nutrition strategies that can be adopted by resource poor livestock farmers. Others include the use of feed additives to improve animal growth performance, the use of silage additives in the ensiling of forages or food by-products, the nutrient degradation from various feed resources using the nylon bag technique, the feasibility of using silage covering films on the silage quality from whole crop maize, and the application of pesticides/fungicides to forages and quality of silage from the pesticide/fungicide forages.

Area(s) of Interest

  • Enhancing forage conservation and nutritive value with microbial inoculation and feed additives
  • Food safety issues relating to forage fed livestock,
  • Development of alternative feeding strategies to local communities for sustainable rural agriculture, and
  • Evaluation of methods that quantify on-farm animal performance changes
