BSc (Hons) in Chemistry - Study code 4513
After successful completion of the learning programme for the Honours degree, the candidate will:
- have an understanding of and insight in the Chemistry discipline;
- be able to provide evidence of the acquisition of sophisticated theoretical subject knowledge;
- have developed competencies with respect to experimental procedures and techniques;
- illustrate a critical appreciation of literature;
- appreciate independent analysis of information and observed experimental data in support of conclusions and deductions.
General requirements
The student must have achieved an average mark of at least 60% (CHEM3711, CHEM3713, CEM3731, CHEM3733, CHEM3721, CHEM3723, CHEM3741 and CHEM3743) to qualify for admission to the Honours programme. Departmental management may, however, deviate from the above condition and grant permission for admission to the honours degree in exceptional cases.
The student must have a completed BSc degree upon commencement of the Honours programme.
Students must apply for admission to the Departmental Chair in writing by end of September of the preceding year.
The programme, which is only presented on a full-time basis, commences on 15 January each year.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Students are allowed into the BSc(Hons) programme in Chemistry at the Bloemfontein Campus through official written confirmation from the Head of Department during September/October each year [Year 0].
If a candidate is not successful [i.e. courses formally passed] in 75% of the total courses for BSc(Hons) during the first year [Year A] of enrollment for the BSc(Hons) programme in Chemistry at the Bloemfontein Campus, a formal request to the Head of Department must be launched before the end of Year A to repeat the outstanding courses during the following year [Year B]. Failure of the candidate to do so will result in exclusion from the BSc(Hons) programme in Chemistry at the Bloemfontein Campus from Year B onward, unless, at the discretion of the Management of the Department of Chemistry, mitigating circumstances (i) can be clearly demonstrated and (ii) is accepted by the Management of the Department of Chemistry.

Assessment (Per module)
Continuous: (40%) Progress tests, assignments, and a practical mark.
Formal: (60%) A written assessment of two (2) hours.
Assessment of the research module (CHEM6808) will take place in the form of a report, accompanied by a presentation in an oral and/or poster format.
