The short learning programmes of the University of the Free State-Disaster Management Training and Education Centre for Africa (UFS-DiMTEC) on offer are primarily tailor-made to address the professional, vocational and industry-specific needs of the people, society, and the labour market. The programmes are offered at different cognitive levels and in various study and career fields. These programs are the third-stream income of the UFS. UFS-DiMTEC has six registered Short-Learning Programmes as follows:
Advanced Incident Command System Command and General Staff-Complex Incidents (ICSA 1500S) The SLP is the fourth of a progressive series of SLPs that will provide first responders in supervisory positions with advanced applications of Incident Command System (ICS) to coordinate response partners from all levels of government and the private sector. This course provides training and resources for personnel who require advanced application of the Incident Command System (ICS).
Introduction to the Incident Command Systems (ICS) (ICSI1500S) The SLP is the first of a progressive series of SLPs that will enable individuals in supervisory role or who will assume supervisory roles at the places of work to operate efficiently during an incident or event within the Incident Command System (ICS). The course is designed to provide overall incident command skills rather than tactical expertise to the first responders.
Intermediate Incident Command Course (ICS) for Expanding Incidents (ICM1500S)The SLP is the third of a progressive series of SLPs that will provide first responders in supervisory positions with training and resources management in the advanced applications of the Incident Command System (ICS). This course provides training on and resources for personnel who require intermediate application of the Incident Command System (ICS).
ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents (ICSS1500S)
The SLP is the second of a progressive series of SLPs that will provide first responders in supervisory positions with overall incident management skills and be prepared to coordinate with response partners from all levels of government and the private sector. This course is designed to enable personnel to operate efficiently during an incident or event within the Incident Command System (ICS). This course focuses on the management of single resources.
Disaster Risk Assessment Using Geographical Information System (DGIS1500S)The purpose of this course is to capacitate (and teach) disaster management practitioners with the necessary skills to conduct a scientific disaster risk assessment utilising the geographic information systems, as prescribed by National Disaster Management Framework of 2005 (Key Performance Area (KPA) 2.
Introduction to Disaster Management (INDM1500S)The purpose of this course is to provide politicians, disaster management practitioners, municipal officials and other role players involved and interested in disaster risk management, with the basic background knowledge and information regarding the full spectrum of disaster management and the implications of the disaster management Act on local government, private sector and other roleplayers.
