Research at the University of the Free State

Research at the University of the Free State (UFS) is guided by our commitment to Responsible Societal Futures – ensuring that the knowledge we generate addresses real challenges and contributes to sustainable innovation. As a research‑led, student‑centred institution, the UFS places excellence, impact, and care at the heart of its research agenda, striving to make a meaningful difference locally, nationally, and globally.

Our research priorities emphasise collaboration across disciplines, with a strong focus on issues such as climate change, inequality, technological disruption, planetary health, and social transformation. By aligning our work with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the Africa Agenda 2063, and South Africa’s National Development Plan, we ensure that our research is both globally relevant and locally responsive.

At its core, research at the UFS is about shaping futures responsibly. By combining academic rigour with the values of excellence, impact, accountability, care, social justice, and sustainability, the university inspires excellence and transforms lives through research that matters – research that not only advances knowledge but also builds a more just, inclusive, and sustainable society.
