The UFS was established in 1904 as the Grey University College, with only six students. Today we pride ourselves on having more than 33 000 students thriving across three campuses. In 2003 the university brought into its fold the
Qwaqwa Campus, which is situated in the picturesque Eastern Free State. This was followed by the
South Campus in 2003, which is nestled in the hills overlooking the vibrant city of Bloemfontein.
Today, we are pleased with the strides we have made in our international collaboration efforts, culminating in firmly forged relationships with international universities. As such, this has led to the exchange of ideas, breakthroughs in knowledge and bonds between our institutions, merely through the connections between people. These international partnerships and relationships provide exposure and opportunities for students and staff that cannot be foreseen without consistent participation.
Our research in Nanoscience, Chemistry, Plant sciences, Biotechnology and Cardiothoracic surgery have proved ground-breaking.
