Get started with Office 365 for free

Enrolled UFS students can sign up for Office 365 training for free, which includes training in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. You only need your <student number>@ufs.ac.za email address and UFS password to log on. 

Once you have completed your studies or deregistered from the UFS, you might want to decide to move your personal documents to a platform of your choice. Should you decide to continue making use of the service, you can do so through a private subscription model offered to you on the Microsoft website.

Please Note: Data costs will be incurred when downloading this software outside off the official UFS Wi-Fi network


The following applies: 

Q. What is the size of the mobile installation package (Android/Apple)?
A. The installation package size is approximately 300MB. If you select Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, you need at least 500MB of free space.

Required Android size: 6.0 and up
Required Apple size: iOS 12.0 or later

Q. What is the size of the desktop installation package?
A. The desktop installation package size is approximately 1GB and you need at least 4GB of free space

HOW WILL MICROSOFT 365 BENEFIT ME

Office 365 A1 licence:  Provides you with a completely free online and downloadable version of Office while you are a registered student at the University of the Free State. The package includes familiar software, such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote. These can be installed on three devices of your choice (e.g. laptop, tablet, and smartphone). With the fully installed versions of the Office desktop or mobile apps, you can even work on documents when you are offline.

HOW CAN I ACCESS MICROSOFT OFFICE 365?

In order to download the software onto your laptop:

  1. Go to https://portal.office.com.
  2. You only need your <student number>@ufs.ac.za and UFS password to log on.
  3. Click the “Install Office” icon in the upper right corner.
  4. Select “Office 365 apps”.
  5. Click on the setup file at the bottom of the screen.
  6. Click “Yes” to start installation.
  7. After installation, start Office and sign in with the account you use for Office 365.

HOW CAN I DOWNLOAD MICROSOFT OFFICE 365 TO A TABLET OR CELLPHONE

  1. Go to the Play Store, App Store or Windows Store on your smartphone or tablet.
  2. Download the OneDrive and Word apps from the Play Store, App Store or Windows Store.
  3. Make sure you use the "Sign-in" option.
  4. Use your UFS e-mail address (xxxxxxxxxx@ufs.ac.za) and your UFS password to unlock your 1TB cloud storage.
