Faculty of Education

The University of the Free State’s Faculty of Education trains teachers in several disciplines. Our main role is to prepare pre-service teachers for their work in schools, ensuring that they have a strong disciplinary base for their profession. 

THE FOLLOWING DEGREES ARE PRESENTED ON THE BLOEMFONTEIN AND QWAQWA CAMPUSES

Undergraduate Degrees


Bachelor in Education (BEd): Four-year Curriculum
  • Foundation Phase (Grades R–3)
  • Intermediate Phase (Grade 4–6)
  • Senior Phase (Grades 7–9) and Further Education and Training Phase (Grades 10–12)
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education 
Required

AP Score of 30 + A minimum achievement level 4 (50%) for language of instruction

Note: Additional admission requirements apply for the following disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Information Systems, Economics, Geography, Mathematics, Music, and Sesotho.

Postgraduate Degrees


BEd Hons: Full-time, one year (Four Areas of Specialisation)

BEd Hons: Part-time, two years (Four Areas of Specialisation)

MEd: One year (14 different Education Specialisations)

Master’s Degree in Higher Education Studies: One year

PhD: Two years (14 different Education Specialisations)

PhD in Higher Education Studies: Two years
