Welcome to the Department of Languages in Education

The Languages Department is made up of a community of experts in language education, who are committed to world-class teaching and learning of language. The department is guided and shaped by the University of the Free State’s vision of being a research-led, student-centred, regionally and internationally engaged university. The Languages Department is committed to maintaining high-quality and remarkable academic standards, research-informed language pedagogies, and engaged scholarship. It is a home for vibrant scholars whose methodological approaches are responsive to the complex multilingual and multicultural society that South Africa is. 

The department aims to achieve the following objectives:
• to produce quality graduates in language education
• to increase enrolment of masters and doctoral students
• to contribute to knowledge creation through research, scholarship and publication
• to increase the department’s visibility through individual and institutional links with other higher education and research institutions promoting multilingualism around the world.
Achieving the said objectives requires effective collaboration and commitment by the department’s team.
