CHAIR Prof Moeketsi Mosia
Vice-Dean: Teaching and Learning
Associate Professor
ETDP-SETA Research Chair in Mathematics Education
Prof Moeketsi Mosia serves as the Vice-Dean: Teaching and Learning and an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of the Free State (UFS). He also holds the ETDP-SETA Research Chair in Mathematics Education, a national initiative that bridges research, innovation, and practice to advance mathematics teaching and learning in South Africa. His research lies at the intersection of mathematics education, data science, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and learning analytics, with a focus on transforming research insights into practical tools that support evidence-based teaching and improve student success at scale.
The Chair’s work is structured around three complementary focus areas:
- Teacher Professional Learning at Scale – Designing short learning programmes and regional initiatives that equip teachers with high-leverage instructional practices in mathematics.
- AI-Enabled Learning Analytics – Developing data-driven dashboards and systems that help institutions understand and improve student engagement, retention, and learning outcomes.
- Assessment for Learning – Creating fair, accessible, and evidence-centred assessment designs that enhance classroom practice and support reliable educational decisions.
Methodologically, Prof Mosia is recognised for his expertise in Bayesian and probabilistic modelling, applying these approaches to key educational challenges such as student retention, teacher supply and demand, and learning analytics. His team also develops cloud-based solutions and web applications that translate data insights into actionable strategies for educators and decision-makers. Nationally, Prof Mosia leads a collaborative research network under the Chair, linking partner universities including Unisa, UCT, CPUT, Rhodes University, and Sol Plaatje University, to drive ethical, data-informed, and comparative research across regions.
At UFS, he contributes to institutional priorities, including the standardisation of teaching and assessment practices, quality assurance, and fostering a culture of evidence-based pedagogy. He also serves on key academic and national committees, including Umalusi’s Assessment Committee and the CHE’s Accreditation Committee. Prof Mosia has authored over 38 peer-reviewed publications (2016–2025) covering mathematics education, educational technology, AI/ML in education, and data analytics. He is a regular presenter at AMESA and SAERA, supervises postgraduate students, and mentors emerging scholars and practitioners. Across all his work, Prof Mosia remains guided by a consistent vision: to combine rigorous research, modern data systems, and teacher-centred design to make mathematics learning fairer, deeper, and more effective for every learner.
