Prof Thuthukile Jita- Teaching Practice Programme  Director

Welcome to the Teaching Practice Directorate

The Faculty of Education's Teaching Practice Directorate (TPD) is the office that coordinates the practical component of learning to become a teacher (also  known as Teaching Practice). Teaching Practice is a component of Initial Teacher Education (ITE), in which students are expected to apply the theory  they've learned on-campus to real-life situations – first in microteaching rooms on campus, and subsequently in real schools within the surroundings of the university. Students who are registered for the Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree or the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) are required to practice how to teach in both microteaching rooms and in a school appropriate to the levels for which they are registered, in order to graduate as a qualified teacher. From the second year onwards, BEd students are required to undertake teaching practice, whereas PGCE candidates go on teaching practice from the first semester of their studies. More details and dates are provided to students in class. Once again, welcome to the practical component of your studies in the Faculty of Education – where becoming the best teacher begins.
