Research

I am a behavioural ecologist studying how animals respond to risks and opportunities in the environment. My research includes acoustic communication in montane areas, and the cognitive ecology of small carnivores and primates. As part of the ARU, I have led projects on black-backed jackal ecology in a montane grassland, samango monkey responses to human disturbance, and the acoustic diversity of high-altitude wetlands. Some of these projects continue to grow, and I am always interested in taking on students with ideas that can expand the relatively small field of cognitive ecology in South Africa. In collaboration with Appalachian State University, I am leading a mentorship programme to boost the career development of early-career women in academia.

I am an Associate Professor in the UFS Department of Zoology and Entomology and currently lead the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences on the Qwaqwa Campus as Assistant Dean.
