Research:

I am affiliated as a researcher to the ARU through the UFS Department of Geography. One contemporary issue in the Japanese society is the aging and shrinking of its population. Rural regions are at the forefront of socioeconomic changes caused by this new phenomenon. A wide variety of challenges, such as the withdrawal of private businesses, management of local assets, and fading traditional knowledge are happening at communal scale. With the constant decline and aging of the population, what do we mean by ‘sustainable community’?

My main research interest is to explore the designs of sustainable communities, not only in an environmental dimension, but also in socio-economic and cultural dimensions in the context of rural Japan. A translocal learning approach is the main approach for my research, which aims to facilitate collective learning on sustainability across communities with different localities.
