Six students of the University of the Free Stategraduated recently, four of them with distinction. They are a source of great pride to the No Student Hungry Bursary Programme, which has supported them throughout their studies.

Some of these students obtained their degrees in the following programmes: Moses Mohokare (Financial Planning Law with distinction), Melanie Niewoudt (Geography and Environmental Management with distinction), Koloki Kwena (Media Studies and Journalism), and Tshililo Nethengwe (BCom Accounting).

Their success under such trying circumstances isa great example of how hard work and dedication, coupled with institutional support, can produce great results.  The UFS No Student Hungry Bursary Programmewas established in 2011 by the Vice-Chancellor and Rector, Prof Jonathan Jansen, when he learned of the many students on the UFS campus undergoing great hardship while studying and maintaining a good academic record. A significant number of them attended lectures all day without a decent meal.

The programme provides daily meals for more than 130 students on all three campuses, and has received tremendous support from donor agencies, friends of the university, staff, and fellow students.
